Xiaomi no longer wants to simply customize Android, but to completely control it. The architectural changes seen in HyperOS 3.1 clearly indicate that the upcoming HyperOS 4 (expected release: August 2026) will be Xiaomi’s biggest software reset to date.
The End of the MIUI Era, the Beginning of Zero-Legacy
In HyperOS 3.1, the MIUI SDK was removed from system modules like Weather and Gallery, and a new HyperOS SDK was introduced.
HyperOS 4 will complete this transition and eliminate all legacy code from MIUI 1 to HyperOS 3. This will be Xiaomi’s first completely Zero-Legacy OS.
HyperOS is no longer an MIUI update, but a separate OS
With the removal of the backwards-compatibility layer:
- Decades-old redundant code will be eliminated
- Unoptimized dependency chains will be removed
- HyperOS 4 will technically not be a successor to MIUI, but a new OS
This is a direct step towards an Apple-like strict OS control strategy.
A New System Foundation with Flutter and Rust

The Flutter + Rust-based system app rewrite, which began in HyperOS 3.1, will be implemented on a large scale in HyperOS 4. This means:
- Consistent UI rendering
- Greater stability and memory safety
- The end of the old Java/Kotlin-based fragmented system
Bad News Older HyperOS Users

Until now, users could sideload new system apps even on EOL devices.
In HyperOS 4:
- The new Flutter-based apps will not work on HyperOS 3 and older versions
- Feature updates will become completely OS-dependent
This means EOL will now truly mean EOL.
Who will truly benefit from the performance improvements? * Changes will be limited on flagship devices
- Budget and mid-range phones will benefit the most
Removing legacy processes will reduce RAM and CPU bottlenecks.
My Opinion
HyperOS 4 is Xiaomi’s clear message:
- Less flexibility, more control
- Less legacy, more efficiency
- Moving beyond the Android brand, towards platform ownership
This is the same path that made Apple what it is today. HyperOS 4 could be the turning point where Xiaomi attempts to become the Apple of Android.
