Using Apple AirPods on an Android phone has always been a compromise. The sound was good, but the key features that make AirPods special were missing. No battery pop-up, no dedicated audio, and no proper device control.

But with Xiaomi HyperOS 3.1, that story seems to be changing.

According to a report by Xiaomitime, Xiaomi has added system-level native support for AirPods in HyperOS 3.1. This means AirPods now work almost identically to Xiaomi’s own Buds on Xiaomi phones.

The biggest change is that upon opening the AirPods case, a native pop-up appears, directly displaying the battery status. No third-party apps, no tricks.

Furthermore, Spatial Audio on AirPods Pro and AirPods Max now works directly on Xiaomi phones, without rooting. Until now, this feature has been almost exclusively limited to Apple devices.

In HyperOS 3.1, AirPods are no longer hidden in the Bluetooth list. They appear directly in Device Centre, where noise cancellation and connection settings can be controlled with a single tap. A proper AirPods icon now appears in the Status bar.

Most surprisingly, Xiaomi’s Find Device (Xiaomi Online Search) feature now also helps locate AirPods, meaning lost earbuds can be found even without an iPhone.

In essence, Xiaomi has recognised that many users use Android phones along with iPads or Macs. HyperOS 3.1 is a smart move aimed at these hybrid users.

In short, HyperOS 3.1 isn’t just an update. This shows that Xiaomi wants to break down the barrier between Android and Apple, and that’s what sets it apart from other Android brands.
